Image rights for Tarnanthi

Clearance for exhibitions of contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, designed around cultural rights as well as copyright.

Problem

Images of Tarnanthi works need clearance that respects artists' and communities' cultural rights, not only copyright, across exhibitions, publications, marketing and the web.

What I did

I led rights and image clearance across several Tarnanthi exhibitions and publications, working directly with artists, communities and art centres around Australia. ICIP is central to how the process is designed. I also wrote the Gallery's orphan works policy and am piloting a register that records approved uses, restrictions and expiry dates for exhibition images.

Result

[A concrete result: number of exhibitions or publications cleared, or what the process made possible.] The relationships built with communities through this work are among the things I'm most proud of.
